Itinerary – Erongo Excursion – (3 Days, 2 Nights) (Tour KAL 1)

Swakopmund – Omaruru – Erongo – Swakopmund

The Erongo Mountains

The Erongo Complex is a scenic and impressive mountain range of volcanic origin reaching heights of more than 2000 meters. It is situated close to the picturesque villages of Usakos, Karibib and Omaruru. The Erongo Mountains enjoy a higher rainfall than adjacent areas and have provided food and shelter for early men for thousands of years. Therefore a great variety of rock paintings can be viewed on farms and lodges in these mountains.

Day 1:

Depart from Swakopmund at 9 o’clock in the morning and travel to Omaruru via Usakos and Karibib. The landscape changes from sparse shrubs and grasses of the Namib Desert to Acacia shrublands. En route we pass the Rössing Mountain as well as the imposing Spitzkoppe Mountains, known as the “Matterhorn of Namibia”. After a lunch-break there is time for a visit to the “Root Carvers of Tikoloshe Afrika” in Omaruru. Afterwards proceed in a westerly direction along a gravel road to Eileen Guest Farm in the Erongo Mountains. Enjoy a tasty Namibian “braaivleis-dinner” from the grill, served by the farmer himself. Dinner / bed / breakfast at Eileen Guest Farm.

Day 2:

After breakfast embark on a farm drive and experience the diversity of flora and fauna in the Erongo Mountains. After lunch it is time to say good-bye and move on to our next destination: Ai-Aiba – The Rock Painting Lodge. This lodge nestles at the basis of giant granite boulders glowing red in the setting sun and overlooking the magically beautiful Erongo mountains. Thatch-roofed bungalows offer luxurious rooms with their own terrace, showers and separate WCs. The afternoon is at leisure. You might want to relax at the crystal clear pool or take a stroll to some nearby pre-historic rock paintings known for their uniqueness. Dinner / bed / breakfast at the lodge.

Day 3:

After breakfast join a Rock Art Tour and view a variety of rock paintings, which are estimated to be some 6000 years old. Afterwards depart for our return journey to Swakopmund. We stop at Usakos for lunch and arrive in Swakopmund in the course of the afternoon.
